I’ve just finished researching a book on pub names so shall watch this thread with interest. In case you don’t know the origin of “Golden Lion”, it has been around as an heraldic device since 11th Century and still forms part of the Royal coat of arms. Normandy had two golden lions on its badge so Richard the Lionheart added a third to his badge to distinguish it.
It could also have its origins in the wool trade – the Merchant Staplers, or authorised wool traders, had a crest headed with a golden lion. I don’t know whether Frodsham was a wool centre
