Hiraeth

Monday, June 16th, 2008

There is a word for it in Welsh; Hiraeth.

It means ‘a longing for home’. I don’t miss my old cottage in Bollington so much anymore, times move on. That is until I return there. There is magic in that valley. Martin and Rachel have had baby Guy since I left. He is nine months old now, going on thirteen.

Hiraeth – the link with past, the language from the soul, the call from the inner self. Half forgotten – fraction remembered. It speaks from the stone, from the earth, from the trees and in the people. It’s always there.

Pandy Glass Studio

‘Breathe Out’, Jan Singleton.

These fabulously expressive glass pieces are by glass artist Jan Singleton, who runs the beautifully converted Pandy Mill Gallery and tea rooms in the village of Pandy, Ceiriog Valley, North Wales.

The images I photographed ‘quietly’ while I was there (sorry Jan). With a backdrop of trees and the river, the pieces have the appearance of shimmering as the trees move behind the glass.

WoodFestWales

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

WoodFestWales has been going for a few years now. It’s a chance to meet makers from all over Snowdonia and North Wales, watch axes being throwing, and buy some beautiful craft works at a fraction of gallery costs. This year it was a lot bigger. It’s such up-scale that it has you looking for the camping field and the live music tents. The crafts people looked a little bewildered at the volume of people passing by. The fairground ride owners looked overjoyed.

“The average person thinks they’re more intelligent than average. Do you think you are more intelligent than the average person?”

I could only fit the second half of the artwork in my little viewfinder. There you are.

Campsite cooking

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

I really wanted to find that magical relaxed beach weekend that Fat Face, Toast, Howies, Whitestuff and the other lifestyle brands would have you believe you will begin to experience as soon as you slip inside their clothing; sunny walks on the coast, surfing, fishing, wave swimming with friends, barbequing fish on the beach. We headed for Aberdovey in Wales to seek out the endless summer dream, and even booked on a sea fishing boat in anticipation of cooking fresh mackerel around the beach fire. The bank holiday forecast didn’t look good though, with 50mph winds and heavy rain lined up. The forecast came good, the fishing boats stayed firmly moored up for the weekend. We did manage the outdoor fish cooking experience though, and found a great little campsite just inland of Aberdovey. Nearly there…

The A894 to Drumbeg, Scotland. Definitely one of the UK’s most scenic roads.

Ullapool

I didn’t think it ethical to shoot or publish this, but I am easily persuaded. Click image to enlarge. Ullapool harbour, after the ride.

Knockdamph Bothy, Loch an Daimh, Ullapool. This bothy has recently been renovated. Indeed, when we visited it featured dry matches and lighters, peat bricks, fresh water, a kettle, but most unusually 2 beds and a 1/3 bottle of Southern Comfort.

Libby and Alison found the in-track waters deeper than expected.

Suilven

The rather wonderful path from the A835 At Elphin west to Lochinver, passing the majestic Suilven, shown here in the golden glow of sunset. We were a little late home from this mountain bike ride…
